Dear Members of the LGBTQ+ Community,
In light of the actions and rhetoric at the federal level, I am writing to you today to reaffirm that Boulder County remains a home of acceptance, dignity, and justice for all individuals – regardless of one’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. As your District Attorney, I stand firmly committed to protecting the rights and safety of every person in this community. I recognize that there are questions and challenges ahead, in a variety of areas. I stand with you.
I strongly support Rocky Mountain Equality and their mission. Together, we will continue to fight for justice, for equality, and for the right of every person to live authentically and without fear.
The mission of our District Attorney’s Office is to protect all people from threats, hate crimes, and violent acts. I remain deeply committed to it. In these challenging times, LGBTQ+ individuals and many immigrants feel vulnerable and have valid concerns about the rollback of their rights and their safety. The ideals of equality, justice, and respect for all people are woven into the fabric of our Colorado values. We must not allow fear and hatred to take root in our communities. So, together, we must continue to stand for justice. I promise to do so.
As District Attorney, I strongly believe that victims of hate crimes, domestic violence, or sexual assault should be able to come forward to ensure justice is done and not feel compelled to hide in the shadows. We are dedicated to ensuring that every person is treated with fairness, dignity, and compassion. I will use the full extent of my office’s authority to prevent and respond to threats, violence, and harm. As you may recall, Rocky Mountain Equality helped the District Attorney’s Office to develop a Hate Crimes Initiative when I first took office. We partnered with law enforcement, the Anti-Defamation League, and other community groups to address bias-motivated incidents in Boulder County. We utilized this collaborative response to address incidents, improve case investigations, better support victims, and analyze trends to develop training and outreach. Also, we participate in the Hate Free Colorado Coalition, which works to address bias and hate across the state. With this strong foundation already in place, we will continue to enhance the reporting and handling of hate crimes, ensuring that victims receive the support needed and that the community remains vigilant against hate and bias.
We will continue to work with Rocky Mountain Equality and our partners to ensure that Boulder County remains a welcoming, inclusive, and protective environment for all. Thank you for your strength, your courage, and your continued contribution to the richness of our community.
With unwavering support,
District Attorney Michael Dougherty
